By Elizabeth Jones with Country Peony

Mother’s Day is around the corner and today I have a very sweet handmade gift that is perfect for the special mother, grandmother, and mother-figure in your life! I am so excited to transform one of their sweet heart cutouts into a charming, personalized keychain with a picture and thumbprint.

This DIY showcases the versatility of Woodpeckers Crafts products. With a little paint, a personalized picture, and sweet thumbprints you can create a handmade keychain gift that the receiver will enjoy for many years to come! You can choose to personalize it however you wish. You can choose the picture option, or the thumbprint, or both like I did. Whatever you do, I hope you enjoy making this with your child for that special someone this Mother’s Day.

Enjoy this video below showcasing how to create the project.

Continue below for the step-by-step tutorial to create your own DIY Personalized Wooden Heart Keychain for Mother’s Day!

To Make Your Personalized Wooden Heart Keychain, you will need:

Cut out the picture to match the wooden heart gift tag

First, choose a sentimental picture of your child. I chose a picture of my daughter and I.

*I printed this picture on my at-home printer. Do a couple of test runs to ensure the size of the picture will fit onto the wooden heart.

Place the wooden heart gift tag onto the picture, and trace out the heart gift tag onto the picture with a pencil.

Then cut out the picture to match the shape of the wooden heart gift tag.

Paint the wooden heart gift tag

Paint one thin coat of white craft paint onto the front and the back of the wooden heart gift tag. Then set it aside to dry!

Attach the picture to the wooden heart gift tag

Once the paint is dry, apply craft glue to the wooden heart gift tag.

Use your finger or a knife to spread out the glue to create a thin, even layer of the glue onto the wooden heart gift tag.

Attach the picture to the wooden heart gift tag. Smooth out all of the edges to ensure it is securely attached to the wooden heart gift tag. Then let it dry.

Create the thumbprint heart onto the wooden heart gift tag

With an ink pad and your child’s thumb, create a thumbprint heart with your child on the other side of the wooden heart gift tag. Set it aside to dry completely.

Apply gold craft paint to the edge of the wooden heart gift tag

To add an elevated touch, apply gold craft paint to the edge of the wooden heart gift tag with a thin craft paintbrush.

Create the keychain hole on the wooden heart

Use a craft knife to puncture the picture where the hole is, then use mod podge to adhere the picture inside the keychain hole.

Apply mod podge to the entire wooden heart gift tag

With a foam brush, apply one thin layer of mod podge to both sides of the wooden heart gift tag.

*Make sure that the ink has fully dried before you apply the mod podge so it doesn’t spread.

Create the keychain on the wooden heart gift tag

Use jewelry pliers to add a jump ring to the hole of the heart gift tag.

Then, attach a keychain ring to the jump ring to create the personalized keychain.

Package and gift

Package the sweet handmade gift, and gift it to someone special this Mother’s Day or keep it for yourself like I did.

I hope you enjoy making this charming and sentimental handmade keychain with your children. I know I will enjoy mine for many years to come!

Thank you so much for following along!
