Summer Gingham Picnic with Woodpeckers Crafts

By Elizabeth Jones with Country Peony

Summer is such a fun time to bring family and friends around the table to enjoy good food and good conversations! Today I have a really cute and charming way to inspire those gatherings. Today I partnered with Woodpeckers Crafts to bring you a Summer Gingham Picnic tablescape idea.

Woodpeckers Crafts just came out with a new line of wooden cutouts called Chunkies. These charming wooden cutouts are made of birch plywood and are perfect for crafting, children’s playtime, home decorations, and as cute event decor. Their whimsical nature added with the gingham paint treatment make them the perfect addition to a Summer party! Today I am excited to show you how I embellished the wooden chunkies into charming place card holders, whimsical chargers, and a sweet floral arrangement.

Enjoy this video below showcasing how to create the project.

Summer Gingham Picnic with Chunkies!

To Make Your Personalized Wooden Heart Keychain, you will need:

Paint the Wooden Chunky White

Paint one thin layer of white craft paint to both sides of the wooden chunky.

Set it aside to dry.

Mix the Paint

To create the gingham look you will need 3 different tints of the same color. You can buy 3 different paint colors (very light, light, and pure), or you can mix one color with white to create 3 different tints of the same color like I did.

Paint the Gingham Pattern onto the Chunkies

*To achieve the charming gingham pattern, I used a thinner painter’s tape at a ½ inch thick for this project.

Start at the bottom of your chunky, and tape off a horizontal line with the painter’s tape.

Paint the Gingham Pattern onto the Chunkies

*To achieve the charming gingham pattern, I used a thinner painter’s tape at a ½ inch thick for this project.

Start at the bottom of your chunky, and tape off a horizontal line with the painter’s tape.

Then, use a piece of tape as the spacer, and continue to add horizontal stripes.

Once all of the horizontal stripes are on, press the tape down firmly so the paint doesn’t bleed through and seep underneath.

Paint one thin coat of the lightest paint onto the chunky inside the horizontal lines.

Don’t apply too much paint to avoid bleeding.

Set it aside to dry.

Once dry, remove the painter’s tape.

Then tape off vertical stripes.

Paint the vertical stripes with the light color (medium), and set it aside to dry.

Once the paint is dry, keep the vertical tape on and tape another row of horizontal stripes on the same row as the first set of horizontal stripes.

Then paint the blocks with the pure color. Set it aside to dry.

Once dry, remove the painter’s tape to reveal the cutest gingham patterned chunky cutouts!

Continue to apply the gingham painted treatment to the rest of the chunkies

For the watermelon chunky, I added a thin pencil line to determine the divider between watermelon rind and the fruit.

These 14 inch wooden cutouts make the best chargers.

Step back and enjoy how cute your gingham painted chunkies are!

Create the Chunky Faux Floral Vase

With the help of a drill and a skinny drill bit, drill 3 holes on the top of the painted mason jar chunky.

Then, attach a faux billy ball flower into each drilled hole.

*I added a little craft glue to the bottom of the flower so it would stay.

Create the Chunky Place Card Holder

Drill one hole at the top of the lemon and watermelon chunky cutouts.

Then, cut a metal place card holder to the right height.

Attach the metal place card holder into the drilled hole with the help of some craft glue.

Set the Summer Gingham Picnic Table

Now is the time to set the scene for a sweet summer soiree. Pair the charming gingham painted chunkies and wooden cutouts with colorful glassware, wicker, and crisp white plates.

Display the mason jar floral arrangements together in the center of the table for the biggest impact.

Using your best penmanship or a computer and printer, add names to the lemon and watermelon place card holders.

Then, set out your favorite food and drinks, and enjoy your family and friends this Summer!

I hope you enjoy decorating chunkies this Summer. I can’t wait to see what you make with them!

Thank you so much for following along!
